Let's talk poop

Lol..bet that post title gets hits. Gross. :P

So, let's talk poop: Do you have a composting toilet? Do you want one? Could you use one?

The Humanure Handbook has some easy directions for building your own. But, when you look at it, it's really just a bucket of sawdust with some pretty wood surrounding it, and of course a seat.

I think I'd like one, once I got over the initial shock of going in a bucket. If I didn't use it any other time, it'd be awesome for power outages. (No electric means no running water when you have a well pump.)

I'm sure it beats an outhouse. Nothing wonderful about traipsing outside in the middle of the night in the dead of winter to have a pee, is there?

It is funny how we are used to flush toilets; a tremendous waste of water when you stop to think about it.

I realize that the majority of people find composting toilets gross, or just plain weird. One person I know of (IRL) has one, and I thought it the coolest thing ever. *shrug*

So, tell me of your experiences with composting toilets, good or bad, as well as your recommendations, opinions, etc.

I'm in the process of getting set up for a sawdust toilet. I don't see the sense in using drinking water to get rid of our excrement, especially when it can and should be composted and returned to the earth.

It's good to see more people becoming interested in this method of sustainability. We need to replenish the fertility of our topsoil, and this seems to be the best way to accomplish this.

Thanks for the comment, Kim! I agree that the sawdust toilet makes a lot more sense than using fresh, clean water to flush away waste. And really, the more I think about the compost pile, the cleaner is seems compared to a nasty wet septic tank.

I was watching a show on television the other day that detailed how a family had turned their roof into a rain water capture tool...then ported all the water into barrels in the basement to be used for flushing toilets in their house...that certainly answers the issue of "I don't want to use fresh water to flush my toilet..." as well...thanks for sharing!

John and Leah, that does sound like a neat idea. Did they have to haul the water upstairs or did they use a pump?

Also, thanks for the tip on how to change the date on my posts!
